The Interrogation Room
by E and Blazermania

John Nash, GM Portland Trailblazers

I would like to apologize to our fans that we did not get a more in depth interview like we did before with Mr. Nash. With preparation for the draft and everything else that has been going on this week for him, I probably should of set up the Q&A for after the draft or sometime last week. Sorry about that everyone.

We would like to thank Mr. Nash for answering our questions.

1. What is your opinion of the new CBA? How does the change in cap from 48% to 51% increase your desire to get under the cap? (Is there more incentive to let NVE, SAR, and Damon walk?)

We are delighted to have a CBA but I am not at liberty to comment on it.

2. How does the expansion of the roster from 12 to 14 players help you with shaping the team?

With the cap increasing it will be easier to get under but it doesn't change much.

3. If you had to put a percentage around it, how much of the information that comes out of a GM's mouth before the draft is posturing in order to get a better situation, and how much of it is their straight opinion?

GMs all tend to be different in how they posture.

4. Do you at this point anticipate getting approached by other teams for SAR or Damon through a sign and trade? Or do you see either coming back? What is the current status of DA? Does it appear as though he will have the health to be able to come back or could there possibly be a buy out?

We will likely have sign and trade opportunities that we may or may not pursue. DA is under contract and we expect him back.

5. Could you give us an update on how Travis has been developing while working with Grgrurich during the off-season? Has he been working on his skills to try and move in as a 2 guard next year? Could you also give us an update on the other players, such as Sebastian and Victor and if they are currently doing any specific workouts?

Travis is improving daily. He could play 2 but is a natural 3. We can update you on the youngsters in about 2 weeks as we start summer league play.

6. Now that the CBA is out of the way, do you expect Monya to be over here for the summer league? Also could you let us know who will be on that summer roster?

We expect Monya to be here.

7. From your perspective could you compare the games of Travis and Darius and how they are different? Again, obviously not being the head coach, do you see Travis competing for the starting SF spot or could he end up getting playing time this coming year at both the 2 guard and the SF position?

Darius and Travis are both very athletic and very similar. Travis may be the better defender long term. Either can play some at 2 guard but both are SFs.

8. Is there a vision for the team that is currently being constructed right now? For example, more of a running team like PHX or more defensive orientated? Or maybe a mix of both?

I'd like our team to be a running team to take advantage of Telfair, Miles and Outlaw but also we need to add some perimeter shooting to compliment Zach Randolph in the half court. We want to defend better and not solely rely on the shot blocking of Theo and Joel.

9. Through the current workouts, we have heard some positive information on Bynum and Webster, could you tell us about some of the other players you have worked out that impressed you, and even expand upon your opinions about Webster and Bynum?

Bynum, Webster, Paul, Deron Williams and Gerald Green are all impressive.

10. Hypothetically speaking, if you had to put a percentage chance on trading the 3 rd pick, what would it be?

I think it is 60/40 that we use the pick.

11. Did you get the chance at the Chicago Pre-Draft to see any individual workouts of prospective players that made it not necessary to bring them out for a workout? Or when you see a player you are all interested in, does it create a follow-up in Portland? Also, was this year’s Chicago Pre-Draft Camp one that you would have considered stronger or weaker than previous years’?

We saw Chris Paul in Chicago, as well as Rudy Fernandez, Martynus Andriuskevicius.

12. There has been a lot written about potential draft picks who choose to only do individual workouts and whether that hurts their stock or not. Do you feel it says more about a player if they are willing to compete against others in a workout? For those that choose to only do an individual workout does it affect how you view them or how they are put through a session?

It is always more revealing to see a workout against other players. Five on five basketball is what we play but 2 on 2 is the max we are permitted.

13. Knowing that there has already been quite a bit made about the coaching search through incorrect reporting, is there a possibility that you could be looking at coaching prospects that are still coaching in the finals?

We are not publicly commenting on the coaching search at this stage.

14. When a new coach is brought in, could that coach choose to dismantle the entire assistant coaching staff whether they are signed for next year or not and is that solely his choice or does management have a say in that?

The next coach will be permitted to assemble his own staff.
